So sad to hear this. He was a powerful influence in my early twenties, a good friend and colleague in all the crafts relating to wood. I credit my trade skills and love of tools, and boats, to him. Blad was an early Eco-warrior from the Whole Earth Catalogue days. He turned me on to Stewart Brand….and changed my life.

Dearest Judi and Lydia, we were so saddened to hear about Blad yesterday. Though I didn’t know him well, the few times I talked with him, it was to learn lifelong lessons. He had environmental insights that have stayed with me. I also remember like yesterday Judy, your visit to me in the Barrie when my twins were born. You were glowing in anticipation of your upcoming arrival (Lydia) . When I asked how to spell Blad’s name, you said “easy, sounds like handsome “. Indeed he was, but more importantly, he was a community leader and a solid partner and father. Philip and I send our sincere condolences.

    Dear Judy, family and friends,
From the first day I met Blad in 1989, I knew nature was in good hands in his vicinity. He was the first to entertain the idea of protecting the magnificent site of the Gulf of Covey Hill. He was generous in showing me the area and was thoughtful about the way to ensure its conservation. I was just beginning my journey with The Nature Conservancy of Canada. I feel blessed to have encountered Blad. My sincere condolences to everyone who have been inspired by Blad.

Judi and Lydia, I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to know Blad and count him as a friend. I share your sadness and am so sorry for your loss. As I read these condolences, I’m struck that Blad had an impact on so many…I’m almost positive on everyone he met. I will remember him for, and forever try to emulate, his curiosity about everything, his creativity and problem solving, and his passion for truth. These are things I will try to teach my own children.

MY deepest condolences to Judy and the family. I met Blad briefly, over a decade ago now, at a difficult time. He was kind and sensitive, and over the years my worldview has changed a lot as a result of the quiet talk we had. He has remained in my thoughts ever since. His tale, and telling, was remarkable.

The grey drizzly November scene out my window is how I feel as I found Blad's funeral notice. I can hear his bold voice as clearly as when we worked together on various Havelock Community Centre projects and municipal recycling and hikes to The Gulf with scientists. Although I moved away from Havelock in 1993 and from Covey Hill in Franklin 15 years ago, I always think of Blad's film documentary "Edge Of Ice" when I'm hiking the rocky shores of Lake Ontario listening to the Long-tailed ducks during spring break-up. Thoughts and prayers with Judi and Lydia from a former rural neighbour.
