Mrs. Berridge was my second grade teacher at Briarwood school. She nurtured my love of writing and would send me to the principal's office to read my "Mrs. Goose" stories to him/her. I really have no recollection of the principal, but my memories of Mrs. Berridge are deep and cherished. I also approached her once about buying a colourful felt horse that she had on display in the classroom. It took all my courage to ask her about this after school one day. I was so nervous, and she gave me all of her consideration. I think she knew how inspired the horse made me. "How much do you think it is worth?" she asked. "I could pay 25 cents," I replied. That was such a huge amount to me back then. "I think that's a fair price," she replied. She treated her students with respect and understanding, something rare in those days, and never lost her cool. I will never forget her. She was one of my all time favourite teachers.
